Abstract

Since 2014, The National Library of Latvia (NLL) has been located in a new building, the Castle of Light, which provides spacious and cosy reading rooms, conference and concert facilities, exhibition rooms, and individual, group and training work spaces. The Castle of Light has become an icon of Riga and is an example of trends in the contemporary philosophy of library buildings, which is characterized by openness, multifunctionality, and flexibility. The collection of the National Library of Latvia has over 4.5 million copies of books, periodicals, electronic and audiovisual publications, and its thematic profile focuses on the humanities and social sciences. The library is a significant scientific institution, a national bibliographic information centre, and performs the function of an archive of national literature.
